1. Are we alone?
2. What does it mean to be a Christian?
3. Why do so many things come in sets of threes?
I am responding to question #1. I saw this question as a college application essay prompt and it sparked my interest.
Are we alone?
Recently, when my mind is free to ponder whatever it may desire, I have constantly been thinking about what each individual person sees through their own eyes. When I look at the people around me, I can hear their voices, see their actions, and interact with them, and I assume that they are in the same position as me, just seeing it from their own perspective. But do they really see things the way I see them? Is there any way to know? What if the world around me was created for me and only me? The world that I see could have been made specifically for me to experience and manipulate, ultimately leaving me in control of what happens. And, if this was true, do other people have their own worlds that they see through their eyes? Or, if the people I see are just created for me, are there really any other people around to have their own lives and thoughts? This ultimately brings me to the question: Are we alone? If all of this was true, which could be the case, it would mean that I am really all alone in this world, which is a terrifying idea to think about. Now, all of these are crazy ideas that come from my imagination, but they are things I constantly contemplate in my mind. I can tell myself that these thoughts are absurd and that each person that I see obviously has their own life and views things the same way that I do, but, in this situation, there's really no way to know.
